Led by senior linebacker David Medina on defense and Richard Gray and Steven Gutierrez on offense, the Channel Islands High football team avenged last year’s overtime loss to Hueneme on Thursday, routing the host Vikings 44-0 in the last regular-season game for each team.

About an hour after the game, Channel Islands (7-3, 3-2) won the coin flip to determine second place in the Pacific View League, earning an automatic berth into the CIF-Siouthern Section playoffs.

“After last year, we really wanted this one,” said Medina, whose 14 tackles and four quarterback sacks (bringing his season total to 12) earned him the honor of carrying the Seabees Challenge Cup trophy that traditionally goes to the winner of the game through the postgame handshake line.

Consistently rushing 5-7 players all night paid dividends for coach Gary Porter’s Raiders, who held Hueneme to 109 yards total offense.
