The concept caught Allan Sadowsky by surprise.

Australian students are accustomed to calling teachers by their first names. In the United States, Sadowsky considers it more professional and traditional for students to refer to him by his last name.

“If a kid comes up and calls me by my first name I’m going to take offense to that because even though I’m here to help them, I’m not their friend,” the Camarillo High boys basketball coach said. “I’ll help them as much as I can, but I can’t be friends with these kids.”

The blending of cultures was one of several contributing factors behind the Camarillo basketball programs decision to host a pair of games against Eltham College of Melbourne, Australia, on Thursday night.
