Mathematics Placement
Mathematics Placement for Students Entering Grade 9
Oxnard Union High School District uses a fair, objective, and transparent process to place each incoming ninth-grade student in the mathematics course that best matches the student’s preparation and learning needs. Placement is based on multiple measures; no single test score, grade, or recommendation determines a student’s course.
How placement decisions are made
OUHSD reviews several sources of information, which may include:
- The student’s grade 8 mathematics course and the content covered
- Grade 8 progress report and final grades
- Available statewide mathematics assessment results
- District-approved diagnostic test data aligned with California mathematics standards
- Other academic records provided by the student’s current or prior school
- An eighth-grade mathematics teacher or counselor recommendation based on direct knowledge of the student’s readiness
- Information or a course preference provided by the student or parent or guardian
- For students with disabilities, the student’s Individualized Education Program or Section 504 Plan, including appropriate supports or specialized mathematics pathways such as EIMM or EEI when applicable
Mathematics pathways
Depending on demonstrated readiness and the courses offered at the student’s school, grade 9 placement may include:
- An advanced pathway, such as Integrated Mathematics 2 or Honors Integrated Mathematics 2
- The grade-level pathway, typically Integrated Mathematics 1
- A pathway that provides additional instructional time or support
- A mathematics course with integrated English language development support
- A specialized mathematics pathway identified through a student’s Individualized Education Program
Course titles and availability may vary by school. English learner status or disability status alone does not determine the level of mathematics content.
First-month placement check
Each grade 9 mathematics placement is reviewed within the first month of school. Schools consider early evidence such as diagnostic test data, student work, assignments, quizzes, assessments, and teacher observations. If the evidence shows that a different course is more appropriate, the school will adjust the placement and notify the student and family.
Requesting a placement review
Students and parents or guardians may request a review of an initial placement or a decision made following the first-month check. Contact the student’s school counselor, principal, or designee as soon as possible. Families may submit grades, prior course information, diagnostic test data, or other information that demonstrates the student’s readiness.
Equity and transparency
OUHSD reviews grade 9 mathematics placement and advancement data each year to identify and address barriers or disparities. The District also works with its feeder districts to promote consistent placement practices and accurate sharing of student information.
