THE 1ST ANNUAL INDUSTRY & EDUCATION SUMMIT: MANUFACTURING
Director Monica Phillippe addressed educators and community and industry partners from fields including Information Technology, Manufacturing, CNC Machining, Architecture, Product Innovation, and Robotics. The summit offered a valuable platform for teachers to partner with local businesses and community organizations, paving the way for innovative student projects to be showcased this spring.
Keynote Highlights:
Mr. Bruce Stenslie, President/CEO of the Economic Development Collaborative, delivered an insightful keynote, emphasizing manufacturing’s pivotal role in Ventura County:
- 992 manufacturing firms, 59% with fewer than 10 employees.
- While representing 3.6% of all payroll firms, manufacturing accounts for 10.3% of all private-sector jobs.
- As Ventura County’s largest and most productive sector, manufacturing contributes 17% of local GDP, valued at $10 billion.
- The industry is more concentrated in Ventura County compared to the state, with its GDP contribution of 17% surpassing California’s 12-13%.
Collaborating for the Future
The inaugural Ventura County Industry & Education Summit: Manufacturing took place on October 25th at the Ventura County Office of Education. The event spotlighted the region's manufacturing strengths and fostered collaboration between educators, industry, and community leaders. OUHSD Information Technology, CNC Manufacturing, Product Innovation and Design, and Engineering teachers from ACHS, HHS, OHS, RCHS, and RMHS attended.
Career Education Director Monica Phillippe worked in partnership with VCOE Director of Career Education Anthony Marenco and their dedicated planning team, including Erica Perez, Alexandra Ibarra, Constina Baylor, Teresa Telles, and Debra Gallagher.
STEAM DAY - DECEMBER 7, 2024 - OXNARD HIGH SCHOOL
Organized by Teresa Telles, OUHSD Work-Based Learning Coordinator, and the Career Education team, the STEAM Day event was a resounding success, drawing over 200 parents and students. The event featured over 20 STEAM-focused partners, including NAWCWD, NAVAIR, SEEAG, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, Climate First, CSUCI & OC STEM, Reel Angler Network, City of Oxnard, CP Aviation, Oaks Christian Girls in Engineering, and OUHSD CTE STEM College Tutors.
Participants engaged in hands-on workshops and explored career pathways through interactive activities highlighting various STEAM fields. Parent workshops were also offered, providing valuable insights for families of 8th and 9th graders on career education, STEAM professions, transitioning to high school, and OUHSD Wellness. A small resource fair added to the event's offerings, while breakfast and lunch, generously sponsored by the Port of Hueneme, were provided to all attendees.
The event opened with an inspiring keynote address by Oxnard College STEM professor Marcella Klein Williams, followed by presentations from six OC alumni who shared their STEM educational journeys, motivating the students to pursue their own STEAM aspirations.
Students from the Rio Mesa Baking and Pastry Pathway, along with SkillsUSA chapter members led by Instructor Mrs. Cynthia Allen, once again participated in a meaningful service-learning project by baking over 2,000 cookies for the Santa to the Sea participants. On Sunday morning, the student leaders rose early to provide runners with freshly baked chocolate chip and sugar cookies, adding a delicious touch to the event.
The Film & Video Production and Photography students from Oxnard, Hueneme, and Adolfo Camarillo High Schools collaborated with OUHSD Web Multimedia Coordinator Teodoro Lopez, Hueneme High School IT Support Specialist Jose Perez, and Oxnard Downtowner board member, Gary Blum to produce a live stream of the Oxnard Christmas Parade. This project offered students a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in event production.
