what are after school programs?

The Oxnard Union High School District provides exciting opportunities for high school students to explore real world careers through hands on After School Programs. Students can train with professionals in the Oxnard Fire Academy, experience the science and safety behind drag racing, design and build in a pre-engineering program, learn about international business in Global Trades and Logistics, and discover what it's like to work in public safety in Community Law Enforcement. These programs help students build skills, gain confidence, and explore future career paths while still in high school.

Oxnard Fire Academy

 

Students in the Oxnard Fire Academy program will have the opportunity to explore the Fire Technology and Public Service Industry Sector.

Throughout the program, students are introduced to the:

- Fundamentals of fire technology

- Learn about post-secondary education options

-Explore a variety of careers within the public service field.

After completing the four-weekend course, students will earn five career exploration credits while gaining valuable insight into careers that serve and protect their community.

Pre Engineering Program

 

Dr. McCoy w PreEngr Student

The Pre-Engineering Program is a 13-week course that meets once a week at Naval Base Ventura County Port Hueneme. The program enrolls approximately 11–16 students each semester.

Throughout the program, students apply real world engineering concepts in areas such as:

- systems engineering, computer engineering, ocean and environmental engineering

-missile technology, modeling and simulation, and vertical launching systems

- radar systems, directed energy, and underway replenishment  

This hands-on experience provides students with valuable exposure to advanced technologies and careers in engineering and defense industries.

Global Trade & Logistics

 

The Global Trade and Logistics program is a 13-week course hosted by Port of Hueneme. Students meet once a week and each semester, approximately 30 students from the Oxnard Union High School District participate in this hands-on learning experience.

Program activities include: 

  • Tours of the Port of Hueneme facilities.
  • Visits with harbor commissioners, managers, and workers from the Port of Hueneme.
  • Review and discuss the roles and economic contribution of global trade and commerce in fresh produce, auto, shipping, challenges in the field, and customs and border protection.
  • Learn about the roles of unions and finance.
  • Learn about career and employment requirements and opportunities.

DRAGG group
Dragg Racing is a 13-week youth automotive after-school program. This program focuses on vehicle simulation, logistics, safety, and training.
 
The program encourages students to stay in high school and graduate by providing:
 
  • Mentorship with community professionals to build positive relationships.
  • Team building
  • Community outreach
  • Career exploration
  • Skills in basic auto service and repair. 
Students meet twice a week and earn five elective credits upon completion. DRAGG typically has 30 students throughout the Oxnard Union High School District each semester. Students will earn five career exploration credits while gaining valuable insight into careers that are valuable to their community.
Community Law Enforcement Academy

 

The Community Law Enforcement Academy (CLEA) is a 13-week program that meets twice a week after school at Oxnard High School. Student earn five elective credits for complete the program. Enrollment is up to 35 students per semester. 
 
The CLEA is designed to provide youth with insight into careers in Law Enforcement. Topics covered in CLEA include:
 
  • History of Law Enforcement
  • The Criminal Justice System
  • Ethics and Conflict Resolution
  • Exploration of various departments: SWAT, K-9, CSI, Investigations, Police Activities League (PAL.)
