October 15, 2025 Board Meeting Recognition (Hueneme HS)

The Board of Trustees recognized three Oxnard High School students for their academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to community service: Layla Maria, Keylin Garcia Trochez, and Lester Capuyon.
Layla Maria
During her senior year, Layla faced a life-changing knee injury that brought her athletic career to an unexpected halt. Yet, rather than allowing this setback to define her, she turned it into an opportunity to lead and inspire others. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, Layla stayed deeply connected to athletics by coaching and mentoring fellow students in flag football and wrestling, while also contributing to school spirit through her involvement in cheer.
In the classroom, Layla continues to excel academically, earning the respect of teachers and peers alike for her discipline, positivity, and leadership. Her determination and strong work ethic make her a true role model on and off the field. Beyond school, Layla is equally committed to her community. She actively volunteers her time to support others, strengthening the bonds that unite her school and neighborhood. Her compassion, perseverance, and dedication embody the values of teamwork, service, and resilience, making Layla a shining example of Viking pride.
Keylin Garcia Trochez
Keylin is a remarkable student whose story embodies the true spirit of resilience and Viking pride. A few years ago, she made the brave decision to leave her home country of Honduras in pursuit of a brighter future. Since arriving at Hueneme, she has embraced every challenge with courage and determination, learning a new language, adapting to a new culture, and quickly becoming an active and valued member of our school community.
As part of the ELD Leadership Club, Keylin has played a key role in organizing important campus events such as the annual Día de los Muertos celebration and Back to School Night, helping to create inclusive spaces that honor culture and connection. Academically, she continues to push herself by enrolling in AP courses and serving as a positive example for her peers through her kindness, perseverance, and leadership.
Through her hard work and optimism, Keylin has not only grown personally and academically but has also inspired others to do the same. She is paving the way for future Viking leaders and making her school, family, and community incredibly proud.
Lester Capuyon
Lester is an outstanding example of resilience, growth, and determination. His high school journey began with challenges that tested his perseverance, yet he never stopped striving to improve. Through hard work and self-reflection, Lester transformed those early obstacles into motivation for success, earning straight A’s his junior year and continuing to excel academically as a senior.
Beyond the classroom, Lester plays an active role in shaping the positive culture of Hueneme High School. He is known for his uplifting spirit, always greeting staff and classmates with a smile and cheering on his peers at school events. As a proud member of the Asian Filipino Pacific Islander Club, he celebrates his Filipino heritage and shares it with others in meaningful ways that strengthen our sense of community.
Currently enrolled in the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program, Lester continues to pursue his passion for helping others. His kindness, humility, and service-minded leadership make him a true role model. Whether exploring new places, meeting people from around the world, or supporting those around him, Lester embodies the values of curiosity, compassion, and perseverance. His character and dedication will undoubtedly carry him far as he continues to grow and succeed beyond Hueneme.
