Thursday Update 06/22/20
The survey went out through Parent Square, an all-call notification and on all social media sites. I do not know why you did not receive it, but please check to make sure the school has your correct email and phone numbers.
OUHSD posted a statement on June 3rd on our website an all social media sites. This statement was also publicly read during our board meeting. The OUHSD Board of Trustees has directed staff to convene a community coalition of African-American students, staff, parents and community leaders to inform and develop a plan for targeted support for our African-American students.
Summer school is online this year, and our teachers have been offering office hours and tutorials for students upon request.
OUHSD is working on a comprehensive online school platform, so students may remain learning remotely if they so choose.
The OUHSD Board of Trustees has directed staff to convene a community coalition of African-American students, staff, parents and community leaders to inform and develop a plan for targeted support for our African-American students.
The Oxnard Union High School District has worked diligently over the last several years to ensure our African-American students receive support, resources and mentorship. Dr. Kim Tresvant has worked with multiple organizations, including the Pinkhard Institute, to coordinate college tours, assemblies and mentoring programs for our African-American students. We have also ensured every site has active BSU and YBS clubs with dedicated mentors to ensure our students are supported. The OUHSD Board of Trustees has directed staff to convene a community coalition of African-American students, staff, parents and community leaders to inform and develop a plan for targeted support for our African-American students.
The OUHSD has always taken a strong stance against racism, hate crimes and hate speech of any kind, ensuring both disciplinary action AND education. We will continue to do so when the actions fall within the jurisdiction of the school district.
The district Phase 1 reopening plan was presented on June 11 and is posted on our website for you reference. You will find answers to your questions within.
Yes, we will open in August. We will be on a hybrid schedule. Students will attend class in-person 1 day per week, working to complete assignments the remainder of the week.
The first day of school is August 26th.
OUHSD is working on a comprehensive online school platform, so students may remain learning remotely if they so choose.
Yes
We do not have enough classroom space to accommodate social-distancing (6 feet on all sides) and therefore, can only bring about one quarter of our students to campus every day. We are giving special consideration to groups of students who historically have smaller class sizes, like Special Education and English Learners.

The district Phase 1 reopening plan was presented on June 11 and is posted on our website for you reference. You will find answers to your questions within. Our AP courses will likely have additional instructional time available. Our teachers and admin are working on that plan as we speak, so you will need to check back with your individual site closer to the beginning of school.
The district has set aside monies to provide testing for all students who choose to test.
No, the school day will remain approximately the same length. Students will take 3-4 classes per day.
Thursday Update 05/28/20
No, we are not returning to school this year, and no, we do not plan to have students repeat a school year.
Unfortunately, we do not know how long we will have restrictions related to large gatherings and social distancing.
I would think that once there is a vaccine, the state will give us guidance about how and when we can return to school full-time.
Our district will conduct our normal Summer School session beginning in July. Our Fall semester will begin on August 26th.
We believe that some non-contact sports will resume in the fall in a very restricted environment or 10 or less students practicing at a time.
Yes.
We believe that some non-contact sports will resume in the fall in a very restricted environment or 10 or less students practicing at a time.
Since we must follow CDC Social distancing guidelines, which limits the number of students we can fit in a classroom to 10-12, we cannot have all of our students at school at the same time. That means we have to find a schedule where some students are on-campus and others are home… until the restrictions are lifted.
Please visit our website for a copy of our adopted Grading Resolution.
70% is considered passing.
I am sorry you feel this way. We did the best we could to ensure that all students and families have the ability select the option that works for their family for this semester.
The UC/CSU and private universities are accepting Pass/No Pass grading and will not calculate that into the GPA, if a child chooses a Pass/No Pass. If a student selects to receive a letter grade, the letter grade will be calculated in the GPA. And yes, you need to do your best to complete your assignments. Teachers have been asked to give flexibility to timelines and consideration to our students’ circumstances when collecting and grading assignments.
I appreciate your concerns and assure you are teachers, counselors, Student Intervention Specialists, administrators and support staff are spending countless hours contacting students to ensure their well-being, and to arrange mental health supports as needed. We are still in contact with all our community mental health partners.
The state is now allowing us to issue work permits to students once again. Please email your counselor, or monica.phillipe@oxnardunion.org, our Director of CTE to request information on work permits.
We will likely have some non-contact athletic programs in the fall, following the CDC social-distancing guidelines. We will have to be alert to state guidance and carefully plan for contact sports, if/when they return. Our Athletic Directors met today to plan for some limited practices (no more than 10 students at a time) in the future. Please stay tuned….
I am so sorry for your experience. Our teachers are trying very hard to adapt to distance learning, Your concerns are very real, and we will likely return to school in the fall under some iteration of block a bell schedule where students and teachers only have 3 or 4 classes.
We are keeping all options open for when we are permitted to have increased numbers of people at gatherings.
The Oxnard Union High School District is in the process of planning the reopening of school. Our planning includes both parent and staff survey input and takes into consideration all of the CDC guidelines for the safe return to school. As the steward of the health and welfare of 17,000 students, my personal opinion is less important than the CDC safety protocols and advice from the VC Director of Public Health.
As with previous economic recessions and subsequent cuts to district funding, we begin making cuts that have the least impact on our students, their instruction, programs and supports. For specific details of the OUHSD budget, please refer to the Public Hearing presentation from our Board Meeting of May 27, 2020, which can be found on our District website. The statutory requirement for our reserves is 3%.
Yes, all schools are scheduling dates for textbook return and personal item pick-up. Please email your principal for your school’s schedule.
I would email your counselor and ask how you may submit your transcripts.
Thursday Update 05/08/20
From everything we are hearing, we assume school will reopen in the Fall, but with class size restrictions which will require us to reduce the number of students we have on-campus every day. This means we will likely go to some form of blended-learning model, where kids will come to school 1-2 times a week and will complete the rest of their work through Distance Learning.
The state just removed our restrictions, so we are now able to issue work permits. Ask your counselor or principal for assistance.
Hi Sara! Before we open Del Sol H.S. we will conduct a community process of drawing the boundaries for the school. During that process, we will determine which addresses/neighborhoods will attend Del Sol H.S. Once that is completed, if your address is not part of the Del Sol boundary, your parents may apply for a intra-district transfer for specific, unique programs that Del Sol offers that your home school does not offer.
OUHSD will not be asking our students to repeat the school year, since ¾ of the year was completed before the pandemic. We understand there will be learning deficits, and will do everything possible to give students the opportunity to catch-up when we return.
Please email your school counselor or principal to request a work permit
Your principals are in the process of developing a schedule for drive-thru textbook return. This will be the same process for textbook check-out for summer school.
OUHSD is now issuing work permits. Please contact your counselor or principal.
I encourage you to reach out to our ACHS Principal, Matt LaBelle, who will assist you with your efforts to honor our Scorpion seniors.
As you know, many teachers are quickly adapting to the pedagogical differences of Distance Learning, and with any new model, teachers are on a wide continuum of learning themselves. Please be patient as our dedicated educators grapple with the unprecedented demands of Distance Learning- especially for those who are new to our digital platform.
Our teachers are working very hard to meet the demands of Distance Learning. Part of the learning curve is how to fairly grade students who have extenuating familial demands due to the crisis. Over 100 of our teachers are participating in our Learning Redesign Coalition to try to determine how to best proceed with measured accountability and a healthy dose of empathy- not an easy task for a system that was built around quantitative measures. We are trying to think outside the box for these challenging times.
Our board of trustees are in the process of considering a ‘Pass/Credit/Incomplete’ system of grading for the spring semester. There are many variable with which we must grapple, but rest assured that the CSU and UC guidelines will weigh heavily into our decision.
Possibly… though, we believe that when the order is lifted, there will be restrictions to the number of people permitted to gather.
I understand your concern. I understand both sides of the debate. The reverse argument is that giving letter grades unfairly punishes students whose dire family situation requires them to work full-time during the pandemic due to loss of jobs and wages, by giving a GPA advantage to students who do not have those same demands. Just a thought…..
We are working with teachers to scale back their finals.
No, all of our schools are planning on distributing caps and gowns so that we may hold drive by graduation ceremonies and parades, where seniors will be able to take pictures receiving a diploma in their caps and gowns one at a time.
Our Vals and Sals will be celebrated through our Class of 2020 videos, through various site celebrations and also virtually at our June 6 remote board meeting. Your principals have plans that they will be sharing in the upcoming weeks.
We are leaving every option open, though we are hearing that even when we open again, we will have restrictions on the number of people permitted to gather in one place.
Your principal will let you know the distribution schedule when they arrive.
Yes, for grade improvement only.
We are using online registration this year. You should be contacted by a high school counselor to enroll. If you have not, please email the high school principal right away.
I understand your concern, however, you must continue to complete distance learning assignment to ensure you pass and graduate.
In the system we are proposing, ‘Pass’ would be 70%, ‘Credit’ would be 60-69% and ‘Incomplete’ would be 59% or below.
Yes, your principals will send you a distribution schedule when they arrive.
Contact your counselor or principal by email.
We are utilizing an online enrollment process called OLE. If you have any questions, please contact clara.galvez@oxnardunion.org. Ms. Galvez is in charge of our OLE program.

Please email your son’s counselor to check on his progress toward graduation.
You can take the sign off the spikes and affix it to a window with tape.

Unfortunately, we cannot sell the new Chromebooks which were distributed to our students non-1:1 schools (ACHS, OHS, PHS, RMHS) for Distance Learning. The 1:1 schools (CIHS, HHS, FHS, CHS) are allowing seniors to purchase our older, surplused (4-5 year old) Chromebook models for $5.
We have checked with multiple out-of-state colleges and universities, and all of them have flexible transcript policies for incoming freshmen related to the pandemic. We encourage you to go the university website and check their COVID-19 policies. They are all very similar. For the most part, they are accepting whatever grading system is approved by the high school district for all acceptances and scholarships, or utilizing 7th semester GPA’s- which were transcripted before the pandemic.
Our lawn signs just arrived to our warehouse and are in the process of being distributed to sites for pickup. Keep your eyes open for an email from your principal.
Our board of trustees are in the process of considering a ‘Pass/Credit/Incomplete’ system of grading for the spring semester and have requested we bring the resolution back for a second reading before approval. I apologize for the delay…there are many variables with which we must grapple but rest assured that the CSU and UC guidelines will weigh heavily into our decision.
Thursday Update 04/23/20
That will be determined by the Grading Coalition and will then go for board approval on April 29th. You will receive the final grading policy immediately following that.
Each site is currently working on a social-distancing schedule for textbook return, which will be published in early May. You will receive a schedule from your Principals on social media and through Parent Square.
That will be determined by the Grading Coalition and will then go for board approval on April 29th. You will receive the final grading policy immediately following that.
Each site will announce the refund schedule in the upcoming weeks.
Unfortunately, the waiting list for Grad Night is over a year, so to reschedule (if and when the parks open) would mean it would not take place until 1-2 years from now.
It is our absolute hope that things will be back to normal, however, at this point, we cannot be certain about any future social distancing or public gathering restrictions. The College Board is planning on administering the SAT again in the fall.
Teachers have been asked to take attendance based on students checking in, completing assignments, attending office hours etc. We have collected a list of students who have not checked in and are tracking them down through personal phone calls.
Yes, you will be refunded if you have already purchased a ticket. Your principal will be sending information about refunds and how they will be delivered in the upcoming weeks.
When schools are opened, the ASB Bookkeeper accepts the payments and schedules the fittings. I recommend you email your principal to discuss.
The district is purchasing lawn signs for our seniors. Since we have 10 high schools and nearly 4,000 seniors, the purchasing and production time takes a bit longer than other districts in Ventura county. They are coming…
The district has always maintained the position that prom and graduation ceremonies may be rescheduled for a later date when the social gathering restrictions have been lifted.
Please email me at penelope.deleon@oxnardunion.org and I will follow-up with my district registrar.
I predict that when we are permitted to hold gatherings again, we will have restrictions on the number of people permitted within a designated space. Only time will tell…
4 year perfect attendance is celebrated during Senior Awards Night. This year, that will be done through a virtual senior recognition each site is developing as we speak.
Please send me your email, and I will have the district tech reach out to you for assistance.
Please email me at penelope.deleon@oxnardunion.org so I can send you a complete list.
I wish I could say ‘yes’ with certainty. At this point, we all hope we will reopen, but the reality is that we may reopen with social distancing requirements. As soon as we know, we will inform our families.
We are not permitted to issue new work permits during the shelter in place order. We have, however, been permitted to renew existing work permits. We hope this restriction will soon be lifted.
Hi Sara! Please email me at penelope.deleon@oxnardunion.org so I can contact you.
Thursday Update 04/09/20
We have not yet determined our distance learning grading system for the 2nd We are convening a Grading Guiding Coalition of teachers and administrators to thoroughly consider every possible option the week we return from break and will decide during that meeting. As soon as we have our policy, we will post it for parents and students.
We have encouraged teachers to assign points for student work for grade improvement purposes only. So, our hope is our students, particularly those with D’s or F’s will use this opportunity to make sure they are passing every class with a C or better.
This week, teachers are in the process of reaching out to all students who have not checked-in to class. If you have not heard from your teacher, please call your principal and make sure the school has the correct contact information for you. Also, if you are unable to get online because you either 1) have not received a device or hotspot; or 2) your hotspot is not working, please immediately contact your principal to get on the distribution list.
Upon return from Spring break, we will convene an ASB Committee of students and advisors (by Google Meets of course) to discuss all possible options for senior, end-of-year activities, including Graduation and Prom. We will let everyone know once we have a plan. I want student input first.
- We continue to remain open to all possibilities regarding possible summer graduation ceremonies. Everything will be dependent upon when the ‘shelter in place’ order is lifted and when we get the go ahead to hold large gatherings. They may lift the shelter in place order but limit us to 10 people per gathering. There is much to be seen in the upcoming weeks.
- Should we be unable to hold proms, we would refund the tickets for the schools that have already sold tickets or accepted deposits. We have schools which had not yet begun the ticket sale process.
- That is a great idea. We will definitely consider it when our ASB Students and Advisors have their Google Meeting to discuss graduation and other end-of year senior activities.
We can definitely consider grade type choice as an option, as we have not yet determined our distance learning grading system for the 2nd We are convening a Grading Guiding Coalition of teachers and administrators (through Google Meets) to thoroughly consider every possible option the week we return from break and will decide during that meeting.
